Deon Thompson is one of the most successful Tar Heels playing professional basketball. The all-time leader in appearances for UNC, also holds the record for the most appearances by a Tar Heel in the Euroleague, in addition to multiple championships across Europe.
Deon Thompson played last season for Unicaja Malaga in Spain, but instead of taking an off-season, Thompson played professionally in Puerto Rico. Deon signed for Leones de Ponce, one of the most successful teams in Puerto Rico.
Thompson had a great summer in Puerto Rico playing for Leones de Ponce 33 times, averaging 15.15 PPG and 6.27 RPG. He had a season-high of 27 points with 10 boards to match. Leones de Ponce reached the playoffs but was knocked out from a wild buzzer-beater from the opponents half.
Deon Thompson spoke to Tar Heel International about the move to Zaragorza:
“They were in a need of someone like me. It’s a good opportunity to re-establish myself in Spain, after having a quiet year last season over there.”Deon Thompson speaking to Tar Heel International
Basket Zaragoza has started the season with a 3-4 record and will also be competing in the FIBA Europe Cup this year. Zaragoza has already played Luke Maye’s BAXI Manresa this season and got the better of them. The next time the Tar Heels will match up is in February. Thompson will be hoping to continue his success in Zaragoza, which has followed him throughout his basketball career.
