Jackie Manuel has been named Carolina junior varsity basketball coach and will hold an interest meeting with UNC students on September 1. Manual replaces Coach Brad Fredrick who held the role in the 2019-2020 season. Coach Hubert Davis was JV coach from 2013-2019 and Coach Roy Williams served as JV coach for 8 years at Carolina before becoming a varsity head coach.
Manuel played four years at UNC. He was a freshman in the class of 2001 with Melvin Scott and Jawad Williams, and a sophomore when the Tar Heels brought in a talented 2002 class that included Raymond Felton, Sean May, Rashad McCants, and David Noel. He played during the turbulent transition between head coaches Coach Matt Doherty and Coach Roy Williams.
The West Palm Beach native, played in 126 games, starting in 86. He averaged 6.2 points per game and became a standout defender. He was named ACC All Defense in both the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Manuel was a well loved leader and named Most Inspirational Player in both the 2004 and 2005 seasons. He will always be remembered as one of the three captains of the team that knocked off Illinois to win the 2005 National Championship. After college Manuel played in the G League, overseas in Japan, and worked on the staffs of Valparaiso, UNCW and UNCG.
Before being named men’s basketball Director of Player and Team Development last year, Manuel served in the same role for UNC Women’s Basketball Team with Coach Courtney Banghart. Coach Banghart spoke very highly of Manual recently as a guest on The Tar Heel Show Podcast.
“Jackie Manuel I know, he is a popular guy for everybody. The captain of the Jackie Manuel fan club is right here.” and “That man is magic and so if we need help with recruiting or if we need a key to the men’s gym because our gym is being used, the answer is always yes, how can we make it work.”Coach Banghart speaking on The Tar Heel Show Podcast
Manuel will continue to hold the title of men’s basketball Director of Player and Team Development this year in addition to his new duties as JV coach.
After NCAA freshman eligibility rules changed in 1972 most universities discontinued their JV teams. UNC has one of the last remaining Division I programs and the only JV team in the ACC. Due to Covid-19 protocols Carolina did not host a JV men’s team in the 2021-22 season, but instead only held walk-on tryouts for the varsity team. It is exciting to see the junior varsity team’s return under Manuel’s care this year and the beloved Tar Heel JV tradition continue.
